Healthy Materials & Healthy Air Come Together with LBC and RESET

The Living Building Challenge (LBC) and RESET™ are pleased to announce a new, mutually-beneficial alignment that allows LBC project teams to use RESET Air continuous monitoring and RESET project teams to use Declare labels to meet program requirements.

“The simplicity of this alignment is going to help project teams accomplish two major goals; healthy air and healthy materials and it’s going to do so without cumbersome tasks or added stress”, says Anjanette Green, Director, Standards Development RESET."

RESET Air is a performance-based building standard that continuously measures indoor air quality (IAQ), tracks the health level of materials and serves as a reference for other green building programs and international organizations alike. As of November 2017 LBC project teams are able to use RESET Air certification as an approved pathway to demonstrate compliance with key requirements of Imperative 08, Healthy Interior Environment.

“We are excited for LBC project teams to have RESET Air as an option to verify Indoor Air Quality, reducing their need to have specific spot tests and giving teams continuous insight into their ongoing air quality. This is a win for both programs.” Allison Capen, LBC Technical Director."

For project teams, this means that RESET Air certification, combined with successful completion of limited post-construction spot tests, will satisfy the LBC’s post-occupancy test requirement to ensure continuous healthy operations of the space.

The Living Building Challenge is the world’s most rigorous proven performance standard for buildings, and was the first program to integrate human health and material health as a fundamental tenet of the program. The program requires IAQ testing for a variety of toxins and particulates both at construction completion and after the project has been occupied.

“The LBC introduced the world to the concept of living buildings and has continued to set the high watermark for the industry”, says Raefer Wallis, CEO of RESET, “these two standards coming together is a natural evolution; where LBC sets the standard for living buildings, RESET sets the standard for how we measure the pulse of those buildings.”

Similarly, products having achieved Declare labels will also contribute directly to the upcoming release of RESET Materials certification v2.  Declare, an innovative ingredients label for buildings products and database for LBC compliant materials, serves as a critical resource for numerous building standards including LEED and WELL.  Details are forthcoming from the International Living Future Institute.

About GIGA
GIGA is an independent third party which combines the development of building standards with cloud software, enabling healthy buildings to be affordable and scalable. GIGA has prioritized health as the most effective way of regenerating the triple top-line since 2009: when people are healthy, so are the ecology and the economy. GIGA develops and administers RESET, a technology driven standard and certification program for healthy buildings.
